Maria & Jens- Rooftop Wedding!

This past week I shot the wedding of Maria & Jens. They recently moved into a fabulous new apt in the north part of Williamsburg over looking McCarren Park. They decided to have their intimate wedding on the rooftop overlooking Brooklyn and Manhattan. Lucky me-- I got to shoot the whole thing! It was pretty windy 18 floors up, but it still made for an amazing ceremony & portrait session. It really was such a lovely afternoon. We couldn't have asked for better temperatures and low humidity! Both Maria and Jen's families were soooo awesome, everyone was so friendly and happy! Well, of course they were happy it's a wedding! The food was also a-mazing! The affair was catered by Crave Catering. Crave, like me, is based in Brooklyn. If you're on the hunt for food for your wedding, make sure to check them out!

Fourth of July Festivities - Brooklyn, NY

Yesterday I invited some friends to picnic at our local waterfront in Williamsburg, otherwise known as Hipster Beach. We had some BBQ, thanks to Brian and Nick, some refreshing beverages, watermelon, and even some PB&J-- complements of yours truly ;) Later on we migrated to a rooftop party to watch the fireworks and BBQ some more! I had such a great time. I'm pretty lucky to have such outgoing, fun, and not-to-mention photogenic people to spend the 4th of July with! Good times!

Chris & Lissette- Hangin' Out at the High Line - Part II

This week has been awesome for any daylight loving photographers like myself. From 6/20 - 6/27 we had the longest days of the whole year! That being the case, Chris, Lissette, and I decided to start our shoot around 6pm. We shot for about 1.5 hours all around the High Line and around Manhattan's Meat Packing district. I brought Kelly along to help me hold gear and keep the people moving past. People are so polite! Foot traffic seems to come to a screeching halt when I'm shooting. Okay okay- not a screeching halt... but you get what I'm saying right? Chris and Lissette are making a website dedicated to the festivities and details surrounding their wedding, so these pics aught to come in handy ;) It was such a good time! I can't wait to shoot their wedding this coming October!

Williamsburg- Small Town Big City

Things are moving so fast! It feels like July is over and it hasn't even begun! In the coming weeks I've got some new fabulous couples to hang out with and shoot, and I even get to go shoot my darling friend Meghan-K get married on the beach in Carmel, Caifornia! That means I'll have plenty of work to post in the coming weeks. For now-- images of Summer in the city!

This past Saturday I had a few hours to enjoy the sun with a Kelly & Meghan. We met up at the Waterfront Park around 2pm and soaked up the sun until the sweat beads began to form rivers down our backs & brows. Then, for me, it was back home to continue work on several albums I've been designing for myself as well as for Photo Pink. (I'll be posting pics as soon as the new albums arrive. I even got new swatches to show off too--- Yay!)

Anyhow, just a few Summer shots around our amazing neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Hopefully Meghan doesn't hate me for putting up this adorable pic I took of her. She just looks so chic in those shades!

To book your date and guarantee that I will be photographing your wedding a contract and a deposit of 30% are required. I book weddings based on a first come first served basis upon receipt of deposit and contract. Thanks for understanding.

HOW MUCH OF AN INVESTMENT IS KATIE OSGOOD WEDDINGS?

The most basic package starts as low as $1500 for five hours of coverage and a dvd of jpgs, complete packages start at $3500- worth every penny. Complete packages include a DVD of digital negatives, a credit towards prints, an album, as well as a get-to-know-you engagement photo session.

WHO WILL BE PHOTOGRAPHING OUR WEDDING WITH YOU?

I have several photographers who I shoot with including Konrad Brattke. However, sometimes Konrad is booked in which case I have a couple other photographers I work with. I am always 100% confidant of my second shooters abilities to create images that are beautifully composed and complement my style.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET OUR PICTURES?

It takes me about four to six weeks to edit and upload your images to your gallery. Why you ask... every image that I deliver to you is individually edited. I’m a control freak when it comes to my photographs. I want every image you get to be absolutely perfect. This takes time, but I promise, it’s well worth the wait.

HOW MANY IMAGES WILL YOU DELIVER?

You will receive about 500 images that tell the complete story of your day. You’ll just get the best of the best everything I shoot, I promise.

Just Journalism - Danielle & Martin Contreras: May 15, 2010

Sorry for the delay in adding text to this blog post, there was a lot of emotion surrounding this wedding for me, so it's taken me some time to step back and think about what exactly to say. One month ago I flew to California to attend/ shoot one my dearest friend's wedding. Danielle and I met freshman year in college at San Jose State, yes long before my Art Center days. She lived down the hall in the dorm and was nothing like me. We were a seemingly unlikely fit as friends but once we got to know each other we were inseparable. We used to say, we only ever made plans on the weekend with other people in case one of us was busy--- everyone else was a back-up plan. Danielle is from San Jose and I was about 5 hours away from home, so naturally Danielle's family became my surrogate. I went on family camping trips and dinner at their house three to four times a week. As the end of 2005 came around I began to realize I needed a different education than San Jose State could give me. So I packed my U-Haul and headed to Los Angeles to start college yet again. When I was in LA Danielle met Martin. The intensity of our friendship had most certainly calmed so we talked much less and saw each maybe only once a year.

When Danielle told me she and Martin were finally going to tie the knot I was soo excited. I knew I had make the trip out to California for the big day. Let me just say, I'm so glad I did. From the night before all through the wedding day emotions were running high, as they tend to on wedding days.... As for me, I'm used to being, for the most part, calm and collected, just happy to see people happy. Except for the occasional heart-felt speech, which always gets me! God I love weddings! But this day I'm pretty sure I almost cried a dozen times. Danielle was so happy, so beautiful, and her family- sooo much love. I guess that's the thing about weddings... you realize how important family is. Weddings are the birth of a new family.

As for the photos, I used one camera and my 50mm 1.4 lens. I love to shoot wide open as much as possible and I shot jpg for the latter half. I know, I know, a big no no. But I was creating a stop-action movie for nostalgic purposes. Danielle and I used to make the drive from Nor Cal to So Cal every now and then. On one particular occasion we made the entire trip about making our stop-action. We pulled over everywhere, we ran through orange groves, jumped through fields, and danced for no reason other than to shoot it. When it's done it will be in honor of our past and to her future. I love you Danielle and I wish you are Martin a happy happy life together! :)

The Night of the Producers: Denis Leary & Jonathan Demme:

This past week was the Producers Guild's, Night of the Producers. Basically an intimate conversation and exchange of ideas between a mediator and two other producers followed by a rooftop reception in New York City. In this case the special guests were Denis Leary and Jonathan Demme. Leary is best known for his stand-up comedy and his role as producer and actor on the FX television show Rescue Me. Demme has been a producer on many feature films including The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, Beloved, Neil Young: Heart of Gold, and Rachel Getting Married. The conversation was mediated by Kit Golden (Angela's Ashes & Chocolat). As for the party that followed, there was a view to die for, take a look at the above, just click to enlarge.

Little Liam is Getting Big

This is my first post in one month. Things have been nuts-o, but in a good way. I just got back from a 10-day trip of Northern and Southern California so there are going to be quite a few posts to follow. This is the first to come, my nephew Liam is 2 1/2 and he loves my camera. My brother says I'm the only one he behaves for, I figure it's because I've trained him so well to love the lens since the day he was born!

Evan & Meghan: Central Park to the Brooklyn Bridge

Yesterday I met with Meghan and Even for their engagement portrait session. They were so freakin' cute! Being the outdoorsy types they are, for the first look/ location, they chose to wear their Northface fleeces with jeans. Such an unexpected and totally personal look! I love it! We shot portraits on the west side from 60th to 77th street. Such a tiny corner of the park and there were utterly endless spots to stop and shoot! Because of the rain we decided to push our shoot time back a couple of hours, which worked out perfect for shooting on the Brooklyn Bridge around sunset. Also, because of the storm, the sky had tons of texture as a result the ended up looking amazing!

This past Monday I was invited to come watch and learn a little something about being a director of photography. Being a photographer, I've always been interested in the moving image as well as photographic stills, but have never really tried my hand with video except to combine multiple stills into action, (similar to animation). Anyhow, my old friend Gregg Conde (from my SJSU days) is working as a Director of Photography in New York. He suggested I come watch and see what being on film shoots is all about. He was DP-ing on Columbia University film project cleverly titled 'Flappy Hands' with Bobby Poole Directing and Jasmine Rivera as the Associate Director. Gregg showed me a thing or two about the amazing Sony Ex3 with a very fancy/ expensive lens adaptor using Zeiss primes lens. That camera was amazing to say the least. Watching the shots Gregg was getting through the satellite monitor was so much fun, I couldn't help but shoot what they were shooting!

It was so great to watch the crew interact with one another on a set where there were so many shoes to be filled. I helped out when I could, but for the most part I hung back and observed, and stole snacks from the craft service table ;). The above are some of my shots from the day. Gotta say, although it was incredibly long day, there is nothing like the energy on a set! Love it!

One Big Happy Family

Last week my sister and her family made the drive out to New York City from Ohio. It was everyone's first time in the New York so I did my best to have them experience some of my favorite spots. First we hit up Shake Shack in Madison Square Park for some burgers, then on a raining Monday we headed out for the American Museum of Natural History. Too bad it's crazy crowed when you couple rain and Spring Break, oh well. It was still a sight. As you can see from the family portrait above, they're a playful group so there is rarely a dull moment with the Valley's.

A Happy Man

This past weekend my grandfather came to New York to visit his two sisters Dot and Marge. My grandfather grew and it was clear to see how ticketed he was to be back in Brooklyn after so many years. I went along with him and my mom to go visit my two great Aunts whom, until this last weekend, had never met. I photographed the whole reunion. This is just one shots from the two day expedition. The rest of the images will be posted in the new "story" section on my website in a couple of weeks.

Coming Home on a Monday Afternoon

I snapped these images this afternoon after an unsuccessful walk around town to all of my neighborhood bikes shops, to still arrive empty handed. One of these days, I will bring home a new baby bike. Soon.

The highlight of the day, literally, was the lucky moment I walked through my front door only to find sunlight flowing through the windows. The light was so orange and bright, I looked to see if the incandescent lights were on. They weren't. . The sunlight filled the whole apartment for about 5-10min. I took some shots with the 5D but I couldn't resist the look that my iPhone can capture. The camera itself is lousy but with any decent application you can make something out of, what might be, seemingly nothing.

Crazy Heart-Oscars 2010

A few weeks back I had the awesome privilege of shooting Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Scott Cooper and Crazy Heart producer Judy Cairo at a screening for Crazy Heart at the Director's Guild Theater in New York. The movie was brilliant to say the least and had me wiping tears from my eyes just before exiting the theater to shoot the group.

Since this image was taken the film has recieved three Oscar nominations, Jeff Bridges for Best Actor, Maggie Gyllenhaal for Best Supporting Actress, and Best Original Song for The Weary Kind, (T-Bone Burnett & Ryan Bingham). Here is a link of an article by Peter Knegt on the film where my image is published. If you haven't seen it yet, make plans to see it this weekend! And don't forget to watch the 82nd Annual Academy Awards live March, 7th on ABC. As for people like myself, who only watch TV online, it looks as though there will be a live stream of the Oscars off abc.com, but as of now it looks as though, there isn't a definitive link sorry, so hopefully this link will work come March 7th.

National Pancake Day!!!

In honor of today, which according to my Facebook news feed is National Pancake Day, I decided to bake some Cranberry & Blueberry Coffee cake. Not exactly pancakes but in place of all-purpose flour I decided to use pancake mix, that's sort of celebratory right? Not only that, it's gluten-free! Had I used an egg alternative I could have gone full force and made this a vegan delight as well, but hey, I like my eggs :) Enjoy!

Cranberry & Blueberry Coffee Cake

1 stick of margarine

1 cup brown sugar

1 whole egg

2 egg whites

1 tsp vanilla

1/4 cinnamon

1/4 tsp salt

2 tsp baking powder

1/4 cup almond milk

2 cups Trader Joe's gluten-free pancake & waffle mix

3/4 cups frozen cranberries

1/3 cup blueberries

Place mixture in 8x8 pan and bake at 350º for about 25-35 min or until fluffy and golden brown.

The Shining Twins

Last week I was sent to go shoot The Shining Twins These ladies, Alex and Marisa, seem to be making some waves in NY's indi music scene. The girls are best friends and lovingly refer to themselves as twins, for good reason... They share a one bedroom apartment, a cell phone, a computer, and even wear matching outfits, and not just for performances. So it makes sense that they would go with "twins", instead of something like BFF.

Before I got to the twins apartment, I scouted a few back-up locations around their place on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, but the second I walked into their building I knew I waned to shoot there. The walls were freshly painted and there was a backdoor leading to a small backyard which let in just enough light to make the space glow. I was stoked! It would have been enough that the space was great but when I got upstairs to meet the girls, I was greeted with two exceptionally friendly and eccentric young ladies. The interview took place between shots and and set-ups so there was plenty to going on. If you want to know more about the girls check out the article by Dana Makeover on heebmagazine.com.

Photographing a Photographer- Daniel Gordon Portraits

Heeb Magazine sent me to the studio of artist and photographer Daniel Gordon. I had never seriously photographed a fellow photographer before so the experience seemed quite challenging at first, but once I got to his studio was I so excited to see his space. Among the tables and lights, were piles of disfigured past components of his work, torn paper everywhere, a paper, eye, a paper head.

Gordon is a still-life photographer who creates digital dreamscapes within the real world. His mediums are paper, ink, and light, and his tool is the 4x5 camera. He's a truest, even in this age of silicon chips and digital printing, Gordon makes his own c-prints of the final pieces, something that feels rare these days. Nevertheless while I perused his studio and sifted through once main characters of a past still-life I discovered a large format ink jet printer, which he uses in the earlier steps of his process. Well rounded indeed. You can see some of his work here.

NINE with Rob Marshall and Harvey Weinstein!

This group was by far one of the most interesting groups of people I have shot to date, Mr. Harvey Weinstein, Rob Marshall (director of Chicago), John Deluca, and Marc Platt. They were discussing with a room full of producers how they developed the film Nine which is set for release on Christmas day. It's an homage to Fellini's 8½, however this film was done in the fashion of a musical. If you liked Chicago, my guess is you'll love Nine. I would give my review, but I couldn't make it to the screening before the talk.

Because the guys weren't on a stage I was able to get super close so I had the opportunity to have a little more freedom than normal. For me it was so surreal to be in the presence of people who have accomplished so much in their careers and who have so much power ( you know who I'm talking about). wow. I love this job! I feel so lucky I even get to listen to the insider details of how this movie came to be. Pretty interesting stuff, sometimes I get distracted from shooting and just start listening, uh-oh.

A Single Man

This past Monday I had the pleasure of shooting the very special PGA screening of Tom Ford's directorial debut of A Single Man. Starring Colin Firth and Julianne Moore. It was so much fun and such a beautiful film! The Director of photography was Eduard Grau, who in my humble opinion, was the icing on the cake! Be sure to check this one out, but beware, it's not cheery but it is an elegantly told story love and life, the past, and the future.

ArpLine - Fold Up Like a Piece of Paper

A friend of mine Gregg Condé shot a stop action music video today for a group called ArpLine. I was invited to come along to manage the data and do a little photo assisting. I brought my camera for back-up but also had some time to grab some shots. Here a few of my favs from the day! It was 30º when we started shooting at 6:30am and finally warmed up to around 50º in the afternoon. Despite the cold, the sunlight and Fall colors made the extra effort worth it. I can't wait to see the final cut of the stop-action video for this song. I think it's gonna be something special!

Fall Photos With Miss Ellen

It's Fall and what is more fall than sweaters? Yes that's right sweaters! My darling friend Ellen and I spent Tuesday morning taking photographs in Brooklyn. She wore this very Fall sweater (wish I had one) and carried a few of her fav books as props. During the shoot I was lucky enough to have a fellow photographer friend come upon us at what I like to call "hipster beach" where we were getting some shots. Mr. Pete Thompson, was so helpful as to tease me about the way I focus my lens, but in the end was quite helpful holding a book over my lens thus preventing evil flare from entering it. Funny how things work out sometimes. :)

I am currently working on a book for my mom's old friends and members of our family that will document our recent trip to Ohio and images from the previous years. These are a few of the first scans of the project. As of yet, they aren't retouched but there is something so tangible about the film scans. The color for starters, but the depth of field too, quite remarkable.

I haven't blogged, I what feels like forever. Man it's been crazy! Been shooting, but I can't post certain images until at least print selects are made and/or the the magazine goes to print. So sorry.. no blog previews until I can upload the rejects.

The most exciting news, (for me anyhow, since I've been living in what feels like 2003) is that I finally gave into the iPhone. I have had the little bundle of joy for slightly over 24 hours now and I have been downloading app. after app, (free ones of course), and exploring the photographic possibilities of, what I am realizing is the 2009 equivalent of a Holga, Diana, Lomo. Really, you name it, apparently there's an app. for that. Okay now I just sound like an Apple slut, blame the day job I guess, but I'm excited, and I can assure you there will be iPhone photos to come!

The best part is, this season's Heeb magazine marks my first double-page spread photo feature. So thanks to everyone at Heeb Magazine, especially Mike, for giving me all these opportunities to shoot. This year for my 4th of July fun, after an afternoon at what is lovingly referred to as Hipster beach, I trekked out to Bushwick with mis amigos for The Brooklyn Tea Party's 4th of July "End of Term" Music Festival. We watched the fireworks from afar and barbecued hot dogs on the roof. A group of us even belted out the national anthem while watching the finale. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect day, I hope everyone's was just as special too!

These haven't seen the inside of Photoshop yet so there remains some work to do, but for a quick edit from today's shoot I am pretty happy. It always helps to have adorable faces and pretty eyes! My favs are the bottom two and the first close-up shot. In-spite of the the bridge image teetering on the edge of a total cliché, I still like the whole feel of the image. Thanks to Genevieve for her genius styling and for holding the fill, I couldn't have done it without you!

Last night I shot the Q&A for the Producer's Guild of America. It was a viewing of I Bring What I Love, a documentary film about Youssou N'dour. I only saw the last part of the film, but what I saw was so moving and beautiful! The film was directed by Chai Vasarhelyi who is pictured above.

Last year for father's day I decided to scan some of my grandma's most popular dessert recipes cards and make cookbook for my dad. This year I chose to bake one of my dad's favorite treats, Oatmeal Raisin Cookies. After I got done baking them, they were so delicious looking I couldn't resist shooting them! So here they are, unfortunately the cookies won't be arriving in LA in time for Father's day, but until then my dad can do a little drooling over what will be arriving on his doorstep this week. (UPS said they should be there on Wednesday dad. )

As for my shooting notes, I shot these at 11:30pm in my tiny little kitchen with only my on-camera flash and some wall bounce. I am super pleased with the outcome! I never shoot food this way, usually I use a back key and frontal fill, or a window with a fill card. But in a pinch, I think this is a great technique.

The Arsenal They Called Home

In the previous post I talked about my trip to Ohio with my mother to visit the place she called home from ages 10-13. Above are images from the house she spent those years in, two other images, (the sand bag and Army men) are from what used to be an administration building on the arsenal.

The house is located on what is now, a National Guard training facility outside the town of Ravenna Ohio. We got in touch with Ltc. Meade who was kind enough to take us on a personal guided tour of what used to be an active military arsenal. All of the homes that make up my mom's former neighborhood, are now used for urban warfare training, which is partly what made photographing this portion of the 'revisit' so interesting. This was one of my first experiences ever being on military land.

The portrait is of Mrs Rogers, who lived across the street from my mom during the years she lived there.

Revisiting the Past

This last Memorial Day weekend, appropriately so, I took a trip with my mom to Ohio. My mom grew up an Army brat, moving from state to state every few years, and even over seas. She never really had that one place to call home, but between the years of ten and thirteen, some of the most pivotal years of a young girl's life, she lived in a town called Ravenna. Located in north east Ohio, my mom spent her days at a catholic school in town and her nights and weekends on the military Arsenal outside of town where her family lived. This weekend we returned to see what still stands of her old house (pics to come later this week) and school where she spent so many hours staring out the windows and learning algebra. These few images were taken outside of Immaculate Conception, where from 1963-1967 my mother was taught my nuns (the kind you don't see anymore) and became a wished for three o'clock. The school is now closed.

I couldn't resist! My nephew Liam is 18 months old and I have been photographing him since day one. He loves the camera! This is was in the backyard at my brother's place the day Liam stayed home with me when I was in California. Just look at his little smirk :).

Before I left California to come back home to NY I shot some old family friends. They wanted to shoot in Long Beach so I met with them there around 5:30. It was tough shooting with the sun in the background especially since I didn't have a lens hood for my 50mm 1.4 lens, nevertheless am pleased with the outcome!

Meghan & Blake

This week I shot Meghan and Blake, who are getting hitched this October, up in the San Bernardino Mountains. It was great to go up into the trees for the day, such a beautiful afternoon.

Techincally speaking, with these images the contrast between colors was so strong that I decided to go black and white with split tone for a few of them. This week I have been teaching myself Adobe Lightroom 2 and I have to say it's the greatest thing yet! It's changing my whole workflow for the better!

This Saturday May 2, 2009 I had the privilege of shooting the wedding of Elise Tumbas and Mike Keller, the whole day from the ceremony to the reception was gorgeous. The ceremony took place in Plymouth, Ca with the reception at Avio Vinyard in Sutter Creek. Despite it raining on and off all day it was a beautiful day and an absolute joy to shoot. These are just a few of my favorites that I have grabbed from the thousands of image we shot.

Turning 25 - A Celebration

This Saturday my friend Rob turned 25. We decided to throw him a party at his apartment, these are some of this pics I took. Rob looks a little trashed to say the least, but who isn't on their 25th birthday?

I was only there for about an hour or so. I had been assisting a wedding all day in Long Island City so I was pretty tired, but not tired enough to leave the camera in my bag.

Brooklyn Botanic Gardens

Spring finally hit here in NYC this last weekend and Saturday Rob, Genevieve and I decided to make a trip to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. It was like Disneyland, the place was packed of people smelling flowers and taking photos. It was lovely!

This weekend we had some the best Spring weather yet! We decided to to stay in and enjoy the weather from the rooftop of a friend's apt. I didn't have my flash on me so I balanced the camera on a ledge, set the timer, and used a cell phone light for fill. A little Photoshop later... this is the result. Despite the grain I am pretty satisfied with this special memory I captured.

For Easter my friend Genevieve and I got some friends together at her place for some dessert and egg decorating. As dorky as that sounds it was a great time! All we had were Sharpies for the decorating but it worked better than anyone could have hoped.

These are some photos from the last week or so. I finally got my lens back from the lens doctor I also got a handy little reversal ring that makes my 1.4 50mm lens extreme macro! So far it's been a great week for photos especially with Easter and all the blooming daffodils in the city!
